Big Thoughts In Small Packages

img_2418During writing workshop students in second grade are experimenting with a different way to express their thinking- through poetry!  During this writing unit students are working together to deepen their understanding of poetry by studying mentor poems and writing/editing/rewriting lots and lots of their own poetry.  Before getting to work writing new poems each day, we review some of the different strategies that poets use, including…

  • Finding a topic that gives them a big feeling
  • Writing about small moments or details within that big feeling/topic
  • Looking with poets’ eyes and seeing ordinary things in a new way
  • Writing lots and experimenting with line breaks, sounds and words

Please save the date and plan to come to school on February 14th for our second grade poetry walk.  Original poems will be posted all over the school for our community to enjoy!
