In second grade we are always learning how to better read, write and think like scientists. At the moment, we are taking a very close look at rocks and soil to see what new things we can discover about very common objects. Students have collected rocks over the past week to keep at their desks, observe and share with their friends. We identified several of the properties of specific types of volcanic rocks (tuff, basalt and scoria) and observed how much rock dust they made and how they interacted with water. We are also researching rocks and minerals using at least two sources (information books and PebbleGo online) and creating rock ABC books to share with the kindergarten class. Here’s a joke we love in second grade at the moment: What’s a rock’s favorite kind of music? Rock music. According to these second graders, rocks really rock!
