In second grade students continue to learn about phonics, vocabulary and grammar both experientially through their interactions with texts and writing, and more explicitly with the Words Their Way program. Following the Words Their Way procedure, small group instruction and practice is based on students’ individual needs and progress.
Students in second grade also continue handwriting instruction and practice with the Handwriting Without Tears curriculum. The HWT program focuses on letter, word and sentence writing skills. The goal of the program is to help students develop proper handwriting habits and then apply those habits naturally and automatically to all writing experiences. In second grade, we focus solely on manuscript practice from September through February. In March, students transition to HWT cursive instruction, which is carried over to third grade.
